De Blasio Picks David Hansell to Lead New York’s Child Welfare Agency

Mayor Bill de Blasio, still struggling with the fallout from a series of deaths of vulnerable children, named a new child welfare commissioner on Tuesday, choosing a longtime social services official who had left government for the private sector.

The new commissioner, David Hansell, replaces Gladys Carrión, who announced in December that she would step down as head of New York’s Administration for Children’s Services amid a wave of scrutiny and criticism.

When State Senator Bill Perkins won a special election last week for an empty seat on the New York City Council, he became the first in a wave of state legislators who are expected to ask voters this year to help them make a similar jump — and in the process gain a hefty pay raise.

“Sounds like I’m in the vanguard,” Mr. Perkins said the day after winning the Feb. 14 special election.

“Moonlight” and “Arrival” walked away with the top screenplay honors on Sunday night at the Writers Guild Awards, the last of the major industry prizes to be doled out before the Oscars this coming Sunday. “Moonlight” won for best screenplay, and “Arrival” for best adapted screenplay; it was based on the Ted Chiang novella “Story of Your Life.”
