Wheels: Headlights Get New Attention as More Than a Car Design Flourish

Over the last 30 years, as automotive lighting has graduated from incandescent bulbs to halogen, xenon and now LED, headlamps have definitely gotten brighter.

But they haven’t necessarily gotten better.

In a study last year by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the headlights for only one of 31 vehicles tested — a Toyota Prius v — earned a “good” rating. Ten models had “poor” headlamps. The worst performer of the lot: one version of BMW’s luxury 3 Series sedan.

U.S. Traffic Deaths Rise for a Second Straight Year

Over the last decade, new cars have gotten electronic stability control systems to prevent skids, rearview cameras to prevent fender benders and more airbags to protect occupants in collisions. Hundreds of millions of dollars have been spent on campaigns to remind the public of the dangers of drunken driving, failing to buckle up and texting while on the go.

Despite all that, more Americans are dying on roads and highways than in years, and the sudden and sharp increase has alarmed safety advocates.

You’ll be playing Frederick Douglass in the second season of WGN America’s “Underground.” Do you think it’s possible that President Trump was thinking of you when he described Douglass as someone who’s done an amazing job? Yeah, I’ve been doing a lot of good things lately, and I’m getting recognized more and more! I don’t think that Trump has read a book in his adult life, or that he knows anything about American history, black history, any history. I don’t think he knows what’s in the Constitution. I don’t think he knows anything about Civil War history, or just about any kind of history.

Disapproval: Trump’s Approval Ratings Are Down. How Much Does It Mean?

Donald J. Trump won the presidential election as the least popular candidate in the polling era. He assumed the presidency with the lowest approval rating of any incoming president.

And his ratings have continued to fall. The question isn’t whether it’s bad for Mr. Trump and the Republicans, but how bad.

The New Health Care: Wearable Fitness Devices Don’t Seem to Make You More Fit

I once received a lot of blowback for an Upshot article in which I showed (with evidence) that exercise is not the key to weight loss. Diet is. Many, many readers cannot wrap their head around the notion that adding physical activity, and therefore burning more calories, doesn’t necessarily translate into results on the scale.

Well, here we go again because some of those folks also believe that fitness devices — Fitbit, Vivosmart, Apple Watch — must be helpful in losing weight. Unfortunately, evidence doesn’t support this belief either.

Mike Tauber, a photographer, shoots luxurious homes for architects, real estate companies and developers. Most of his pictures show elegant interiors, but he’ll also turn his back on a sunken living room or paneled library and point his camera out the window. More than 200 of his multimillion-dollar panoramas are collected in “Vista Manhattan: Views From New York City’s Finest Residences,” recently out from Schiffer Publishing ($45). Mr. Tauber, who lives in Rye, N.Y., spoke about his King Kong perspectives, the magic of twilight and the best places to live and look.

A casserole can be a potent weapon.

It is one that Shanna Castillo has been using with precision since she started a neighborhood Facebook group, Love Trumps Hate Sunset Park Brooklyn, the week after Donald J. Trump was elected president.

Every month, members invite undocumented immigrants from the neighborhood into their homes for dinner. With food, wine and child care, living rooms are transformed into havens where immigrants can speak freely with lawyers and advocates about their rights and risks.
