MORE (R-Ariz.) on Twitter on Saturday for his vote against the GOP Senate majority during the Republican attempt to repeal Obamacare in 2017. McCain, who died last year, was the third Republican to vote against the bill to replace the Affordable Care Act, former President Obama's signature legislative accomplishment, in 2017. The tweet appeared to refer to the unverified dossier of Trump's ties to Russia, authored by a former British intelligence agent and reportedly provided to BuzzFeed by McCain's office. MORE’s 2020 spending proposal has drawn criticism from deficit hawks worried that it fails to balance the budget within a decade, but some Democrats are promoting a new economic theory that says deficits don’t really matter. The rationale, known as Modern Monetary Theory (MMT), argues that debt poses much less of a threat than previously thought. And while it remains far from the economic mainstream, the idea is gaining traction among left-wing Democrats proposing expensive policies like Medicare for All and the Green New Deal. Freshman Rep.

Senate Republicans who are up for reelection next year are sticking as close to MORE as possible, especially on his signature issue of illegal immigration and border security. Even as some Senate Republicans broke with Trump over his emergency declaration to build a wall on the Mexican border, most of those running for reelection next year backed Trump — a sign of their fear of Trump-fueled primary opponents. Only one of the 12 Republicans who voted on Thursday for a Democratic-backed resolution overturning Trump’s emergency declaration is up for reelection next year:

Ocasio-Cortez, of course, is suddenly one of the most influential Democrats in the country.  (House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has just 2.3 million Twitter followers, and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer just 1.7 million.) In other words, if AOC criticizes Reagan, people will pay attention.  That was, she continued, “not explicit racism, but still rooted in a racist caricature.” As to AOC’s charge that Reagan was trafficking in racism, there’s been plenty of righteous pushback.  And as for the specific issue of welfare, it is true that Reagan was a fierce o

This year, when people ask me, Charlie, what are you giving up for Lent?  My answer has to be that I’m giving up the hope that any elected government leaders other than President Trump, are willing to stand up for the beliefs and intentions of a majority of Americans. This past week, 12 Republican Senators (does that number sound at all familiar in the context of Lent?) joined all of their Democratic colleagues in voting 59-41 in support of a Bill that declared as unconstitutional the President’s National Emergency Declaration to fund a border wall.

On the GOP side, President Trump faces a real possibility of a primary challenge from one or more Republicans. And on top of all that, there are some independents who are considering mounting a third-party bid for the nation’s highest office. We’re keeping track of where all possible presidential candidates stand: Who’s running, who isn’t running, and, when the time comes, who has dropped out. We’ll be updating this list as candidates declare their intentions, so keep checking in. © 2019 Boston Globe Media Partners, LLC
