“Just had a long and very good call with President Xi of China. Deal is moving along very well,” said Trump. “If made, it will be very comprehensive, covering all subjects, areas, and points of dispute. Big progress being made!” China has been promoting progress on trade negotiations with the United States over the past two weeks. Leading up to Christmas day the two nations held trade talk phone calls that the Chinese commerce ministry was sure to promote afterward. China specifically promoted progress on not only trade but on the highly charged issue of intellectual property.

In October he said that "no more money or aid will be given to Honduras" if a migrant caravan was not stopped. Trump has made illegal immigration a key focus of his presidency. Leading up to the 2018 miderms he focused heavily on a migrant caravan moving toward the U.S. from Guatemala, labeling it as an "invasion" that would bring crime and drugs across the Southern border. Reducing foreign aid to the countries would require congressional approval through the appropriations process, which would be unlikely with Democrats retaking the House majority in January.
