Article snippet: Hours before he was set to take part in a solemn ceremony commemorating D-Day, President Donald Trump sent a number of missives over Twitter, blasting singer and actress Bette Midler in one of them. In a tweet around 1 a.m. London time, Trump called Midler a “washed up psycho” in response to a tweet she sent days earlier sharing a quote that was misattributed to Trump. Midler apologized Monday for sharing a quote insulting the intelligence of Republican voters that is commonly attributed to Trump on social media, but that he never said. Trump sent the tweet ahead of a ceremony in England to mark the 75th anniversary of the day when Allied soldiers, sailors, and airmen conducted an invasion on the beaches of Nazi-occupied France that ultimately helped liberate Europe from Nazi Germany. Thousands of troops died in the operation. It was the latest exchange in a lengthy feud between the two that pre-dates Trump’s presidency. Trump and Midler have exchanged angry tweets as far back as 2012, according to the Trump Twitter archive, with Trump often attacking Midler’s looks — a tactic he often uses when criticizing women. Trump’s feud with Midler was well-known enough that a writer for Deadspin had an eerily correct prediction of today’s tweet back in 2017. Christina Prignano can be reached at @cprignano.
