But far more damaging to Ms. McCue as well as to her family are the emotional scars left by Charlotte’s death — something not likely to change after the girl’s killer, Alexander M. West, was sentenced on Monday to between five and 15 years in prison for second-degree manslaughter and seven other charges. “Most days, I would rather be anyone else other than Courtney McCue because it hurts too much to walk in my shoes,” Ms. McCue, 39, said in court here on Monday. “Every move I make, I feel a physical and emotional pain that I can never escape.” Last July, after a day spent partying at Log Bay Day, a sprawling, rowdy boating celebration that took place each summer on the lake’s east side, Mr. West, then 24, drove his 21-foot fiberglass Larson into the antique Gar Wood piloted by Charlotte’s grandfather, Robert Knarr. As Mr. West’s boat went airborne, its propeller mangled Charlotte, killing her instantly and severely injuring her mother.
